Basal Body Temperature

Basal temperature is the body temperature measured in calm state after a long 3 - 6 hour sleep. This temperature is measured in mouth, vagina or rectum. Different environment factors dont have effect on basal body temperature. Many women think that basal temperatures measurement is some kind of formality doctors ask of them and doesnt play any important role, but that isnt correct.
Method of measuring this temperature was discovered in 1953 by an english professor and nowadays is considered a research method. This technique is currently used for functional diagnostics of ovarys along with some other methods. According to the results, a special diagram is made.
Such method is mostly used in gynaecology and is employed by doctors in the following situations:
- if the woman has been making attemps to become pregnant during a year without any result;
- if suspicions about infertility arise;
- if doctors suspect various hormonal changes.
Besides that many women measure basal body temperature if they want to:
- increase probability of conception and pregnancy;
- experimentate with child genders planning.
Based on conducted research, doctors can determine:
- whether the ovule is ripening, in what days it is happening, also the most dangerous periods can be marked out, during which the pair should take precautions or quite the opposite - have sex to become pregnant.;
- whether a new ovule ripens after ovulation;
- endocrine systems functionality;
- onset of endometritis;
- when will the next menstruation come;
- whether the woman is pregnant, or it is just a delayed menstrual period.
Basal temperature not only shows beginning of ovulation, but also allows to notice endocrine and reproductive systems deseases. In order to get reasonably accurate information, basal temperature must be measured and added to the diagram during three cycles, only then adequate prognosis of ovulations beginning can be made and conception day can be calculated, also this process provides knowledge about hormonal disorders. Only specialist can analyze the results accurately, complete diagram gives doctor possibility to detect deviations in the cycle and notice the abscence of ovulation, however establishing diagnosis relying only on diagrams data, without previously performed assessments and analyses, shows the doctors  incompetence. Thus this method isnt effective for planning pregnancy or childs gender.

To measure basal body temperature youll need an ordinary thermometer - mercurial or electronic. Measurement with mercurial thermometer lasts 5 minutes, with electronic - until the signal appears. After electronic thermometer gives a signal, the temperature will continue increasing because thermometer is still recording it, thus try to remove thermometer slowly. Its advisable to prepare the thermometer beforehand and to put in near the bed.
You should measure your temperature daily, that includes menstruation time. Basal body temperature is measured in mouth, rectum or vagina. However, you must remember that during the measurement process the place where basal body temperature is being measured shouldnt change in any way. If the measurement is performed in mouth, thermometer should be put under the tongue and kept there for 5 minutes with closed lips.
In rectal or vaginal basal temperatures measurement thermometer should be put into vagina or anus with its narrow end, measurement takes three minutes. However, despite existance of many methods the most widely-known is method of measuring the temperature in rectum.
Measurements should be performed in the same time, acceptable deviation is roughly an hour or half an hour, if you overslept the time its essential to write this in the diagram. It is important for taking the temperature into account later, as each hour it rises by 0,1 degree. Unbroken sleep should last three hours before basal temperatures measurement. So, if you used to measure basal body temperature at 8 a.m. but got up at 7 a.m. this time, that is to say, an hour earlier, then before you go you should necessarily measure basal temperature, otherwise by regular 8 a.m. it wont be correct.
